Charleston Water System receives national award for its Geographic Information System (GIS)
(August 1, 2011)—Charleston Water System has received a Special Achievement in GIS Award from Esri, Inc. for innovative use of its geographic information system (GIS) technology.
Charleston Water System uses GIS to manage its water and sewer infrastructure. Over the last several years, Charleston Water has worked to link other information systems with its GIS, namely the maintenance, financial, and customer information systems.
As a result, Charleston Water can more effectively use data to manage assets because all asset information—location, condition, and maintenance history—is in the GIS. For example, CWS technicians can open GIS, and with a few clicks on a map, access a wealth of data on a water main or sewer line, including when it was installed, the materials used, the maintenance history, and more.
“GIS is a powerful tool for managing our infrastructure,” says Connie Banegas, Charleston Water’s GIS Manager, “It allows us to pull data from our various systems into one place so that we can make data-based decisions, smart decisions based on all the relevant information. It’s key component of our asset management program.”
Charleston Water received the Special Achievement in GIS Award at the Esri International User Conference in San Diego on July 17th. For more information about the award, including project information and photos, visit Esri's web site.
